Inspired by Maria Bregendahl’s macabre 1914 novel A Night of Death, AS IN HEAVEN is the quietly intoxicating debut feature from Danish writer/director Tea Lindeburg. Set in 19th century rural Denmark, the film follows 14-year-old Lise, who dreams of escaping a household where the Bible dictates life and superstition is stronger than trust in science. When her pregnant mother falls ill during labour, Lise’s hopes of fleeing the farm for a better life grow less and less likely by the hour. A tragic portrait of female oppression and the disastrous potential perils of religious dogma, this cautionary tale packs a hefty punch.
