Featuring the very first appearance of Jacques Tati’s now-iconic titular character, MONSIEUR HULOT'S HOLIDAY follows the misadventures of the lovable, gauche Frenchman as he undertakes a summer vacation at a modest seaside resort, where he accidentally (but good-naturedly) causes havoc. Beautifully shot in the tiny coastal village of Saint-Marc-sur-Mer, the film was so well received by the locals, a bronze statue memorialising the director has since been erected on the beach boardwalk. With a script that affectionately lampoons several elements of French political and economic classes, Tati earned his first (and only) Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
